The Basics of Airsoft
Airsoft is a team sport based on honour where participants use realistic replicas to fire 6 mm plastic BBs at each other. Unlike paintball, where hits are marked by visible paint, airsoft relies entirely on the honour system — every participant must honestly acknowledge a tabamus and leave the game accordingly. This makes airsoft unique among competitive sports: integrity is not enforced by technology but by the culture and values of the participants themselves.
The sport originated in Japan in the 1970s as a way for firearms enthusiasts to safely handle realistic-looking replicas in a legal context. It spread rapidly to Europe and the United States during the 1980s and 1990s and has grown into a globally recognised recreational activity with millions of participants worldwide.
How Does Airsoft Work?
A typical airsoft game involves two or more teams competing in various tactical scenarios. Common game formats include team elimination (last team standing wins), capture the flag, VIP protection, point control and assault missions. Games take place on outdoor terrain or in dedicated indoor arenas.
Replicas — never referred to as weapons in the airsoft community — are powered by spring mechanisms, electric motors (AEGs) or compressed gas. They fire 6 mm plastic BBs at velocities governed by strict safety regulations. In Estonia, the N.A.C. network follows established rules that set clear limits on replica power measured in joules.
Safety and Rules
Safety is the foundation of all airsoft activities. Before any game, all participants receive a thorough safety briefing covering: mandatory use of approved face masks at all times during play, minimum engagement distances for different types of replicas, acceptable behaviour on the field and how to signal surrender or injury.
Face masks are the single most important piece of safety equipment. No participant is permitted on the playing field without an approved face mask that meets the impact resistance standards for airsoft. All replicas are chronographed before events to ensure they do not exceed the power limits set by N.A.C. network rules.
Who Can Participate?
Airsoft is open to everyone from age 13. Children younger than 13 may also participate with written parental consent and active adult supervision. There is no upper age limit — experienced players in their 50s and 60s regularly participate in events and often bring tactical wisdom that younger players lack.
No prior experience is needed to join a public event or a private booking. Our game masters provide complete instructions before every event. All equipment is available to rent on-site, so you only need to arrive in appropriate clothing and footwear.
Equipment — What You Need
For beginners and casual participants, all necessary equipment can be rented at the event site. A standard rental package includes a replica, face mask, tactical vest, gloves and a supply of BBs. Experienced players may bring their own replicas and accessories, subject to a mandatory safety check at the start of each event.
Comfortable outdoor clothing is essential — you will be moving through natural terrain, crouching, crawling and running. Long sleeves and trousers are recommended for protection against minor scrapes. Sturdy footwear with ankle support makes a significant difference in comfort and safety on uneven terrain.
Airsoft in Estonia
Estonia has a thriving airsoft community with hundreds of active players across the country. The N.A.C. network organises regular public events in Tallinn (Harku) and Loksa (Suurpea), making high-quality airsoft accessible to players of all experience levels. Public events are open for registration on the Naissaare Airsoft website.
